Just before I finally found romantic and domestic bliss, I had a short lived and decidedly flawed relationship that flamed out and left me stranded in an apartment in JP for a summer tossing and turning amid bouts of insomnia, bad dreams, and abject doubts as my own self worth.
The place was very close to the train line and when a train passed by it would make the whole building shutter. Worse still was some sort of machine that would come crawling down the track in the wee hours making a horrid screeching noise like it was scraping industrial grade plaque off the rusty rails. It would be faint at first, growing in volume as it passed by til it made thought (much less sleep) a dim fantasy. And that is the pleasant backdrop to what this song is about. Things are so much better now. |
Train Rolls By
Everytime the train rolls by
The rafters shake and a baby cries
And every time I closed my eyes
I'm crawling out of my skin
I roll over and stretch and yawn
The wall shows through where the paper's torn
I had a thought but the thought is gone
Over before it begins
Stain on the floor where you spilled your drink
Plenty of time to sit and think
Some of us float and some of us sink
And some of us merely spin
Everytime the train rolls by
I cover my head and close my eyes
The rafter shake and another dream dies
Over before it begins
Everytime the train rolls by
The rafters shake and a baby cries
And every time I closed my eyes
I'm crawling out of my skin
I roll over and stretch and yawn
The wall shows through where the paper's torn
I had a thought but the thought is gone
Over before it begins
Stain on the floor where you spilled your drink
Plenty of time to sit and think
Some of us float and some of us sink
And some of us merely spin
Everytime the train rolls by
I cover my head and close my eyes
The rafter shake and another dream dies
Over before it begins
