I promise, this is the last break up song on the album.

This is actually from the same break up that yielded Tender Kisses. This one's a bit more nitty-gritty detail. Man that one hurt. But you know you got a real good break up going on when you get two songs out of it. Ka-ching!

We kept this one simple. Kirsten sings beautifully on it and Michael's Dobro playing is spot on. Glad I managed to get Mr. Bean on the recording. He's a real asset.

back to the songs

Second Best

My baby says she's restless
As she resting in my arms
There's this other guy she needs to try
And I losing all my charms

  My baby cannot see me
When she sees how sad I am
  My frowning brings her down
And sadness is not part of her plan

My baby says she need me
To stop needing her at all
But there's no one to whom I'd run
And few I'd want to call

And she says I should go see someone
For it may ease the pain
But I just whose ache would it would make
Sting less when I'm foot-loose again

And all we had is gone long gone
And I walk about with this hole in my chest
And all the girls are waving, singing
So long so long
'Cause no one wants to be the second best

Her fallow heart: a barren field
Where nothing would take root
What can we sow but a bitter yield
When seed will not bare fruit

She cuts the thread and the line goes dead
 And love goes cold
The road runs out 'cause with out a doubt
Tin is just not gold
And all we had is gone long gone...
