This is an older song. How can you tell? Because it's a break up song. And I may well have written all the break up songs I'll need to write.
How foolish the heart can be. Even knowing that something is doomed and can't last, love loses it's head and the heart dives in. And then breaks when the inevitable happens. Is the end a bit maudlin? Perhaps. But I sort of borrowed from one of my favorite verses in one of my favorite songs: Good Night Irene. (Sometimes I live in the country, sometimes I live in the town ...) By the way, it's hard to sing and cry at the same time. I still get a tad verklempt when I sing this one. |
Tender Kisses
Now I'm getting tender kisses
Please don't tell me how long these kisses last
Just give me one more frozen moment
‘Cause the time of your leaving's coming fast
I could go back to being no one
You could go back Santa Fe
But when I wake in the morning and you’re still with me
I let myself get to dreaming you'll stay
Yes & now I'm getting tender kisses
I hear a whistle as a train pulls into town
I'll say goodbye and then I'll pine for your sweet kisses
I'll hold you tight but I won't hold you down
I know you must carry your own water
And you know I will always carried mine
I didn't mean to loss my heart or make you love me
But your kisses made me drunk as any wine
But now I'm getting tender kisses
I hear a whistle as a train pulls into town
I'll say goodbye and then I'll pine for your sweet kisses
I'll hold you tight but I won't hold you down
Yes and now here are the last of tender kisses
For there's no ring and no white wedding gown
It's fair thee well and never more your tender kisses
I want to jump into the river and drown
I want to jump into the river and drown
